چکیده

This paper describes the analysis, simulation and testing of a microengineered motion-driven power generator, suitable for application in sensors within or worn on the human body. Micro-generators capable of powering sensors have previously been reported, but these have required high frequency mechanical vibrations to excite a resonant structure. However, bodydriven movements are slow and irregular, with large displacements, and hence do not effectively couple energy into such generators. The device presented here uses an alternative, non-resonant operating mode. Analysis of this generator shows its potential for the application considered, and shows the possibility to optimise the design for particular conditions. An experimental prototype based on a variable parallel-plate capacitor operating in constant charge mode is described which confirms the analysis and simulation models. This prototype, when precharged to 30 V, develops an output voltage of 250 V, corresponding to 0.3 μJ per cycle. The experimental test procedure and the instrumentation are also described.

Modeling and analysis of micro piezoelectric power generators for micro-electromechanical- systems applications

The extremely small size of the micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) makes them widely suitable for some special applications. The simplicity of the piezoelectric micro-generators is attractive for MEMS applications, especially for remote systems. In this paper, a general concept of the piezoelectric energy conversion is first given. A simple design modeling and analysis of the ‘31’ transvers...

Micro Electret Energy Harvesting Device with Analogue Impedance Conversion Circuit

A vibration-driven electret generator has been developed for energy harvesting applications. By using parylene as the spring material, a low-resonant-frequency MEMS generator is realized. Large inplane amplitude of 0.8 mm at the resonant frequency as low as 37 Hz has been achieved. With our early prototype, output power of 0.28 μW has been obtained. We also demonstrate electret-powered operatio...

Environmentally friendly power generator based on moving liquid dielectric and double layer effect

An electrostatic power generator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy by utilising the principle of variable capacitance. This change in capacitance is usually achieved by varying the gap or overlap between two parallel metallic plates. This paper proposes a novel electrostatic micro power generator where the change in capacitance is achieved by the movement of an aqueous solution of...

Silicon Low Power, Low Voltage MEMS Switches for Space Communication Systems

This paper describes a MEMS RF switch designed and developed specifically for space communication systems, with a novel geometry and operating mode that overcome the drawbacks of previous devices. To avoid the need for high voltage control, the switch uses electro-thermal rather than electrostatic operation; although this requires higher power consumption during switching, a latching configurat...

A MEMS Thermoelectric Generator by Samuel

The demand for portable power is large and expanding. Technologies currently available to meet this demand include batteries, fuel cells, thermophotovoltaic (TPV) generators and thermoelectric (TE) generators. Fuel cells and generators offer significantly improved performance over batteries, but issues of fuel processing and miniaturization remain. Microfabrication has the potential to address ...
